Southsea is a pleasant seaside town, adjacent to Portsmouth.The area is rich in maritime heritage with the Historic Dockyard housing the HMS Victory, the flagship of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar and the remains of the Mary Rose, which was built for Henry VIII and who watched it sink on it's maiden voyage.Gunwharf Quays is nearby, with over 95 designer shop outlets, bars and restaurants, a 14 screen cinema, bowling complex and casino. The Isle of Wight is easily accessible from Portsmouth Harbour, with ferries running every half hour or so. The hovercraft leaves from Southsea seafront every 30 minutes and takes only minutes to arrive at Ryde pier. The island has a multitude of attractions for every age group and is famous for its dinosaur remains. The Isle of Wight is also world renown for sailing at Cowes, and is well worth a visit. Winchester, Southampton, Guildford, Brighton and the New Forest are all within an hours drive. London by train takes under two hours. |
